It consists of approximately 80% casein and 20% whey protein. What distinguishes the products is not the amino acid composition, but exclusively the processing and purification process afterward (<span style=\"color: #006900;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #006900;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24482589\/\">1<\/a><\/strong><\/span>).  <\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>That sounds simple \u2013 and it is. Nevertheless, manufacturers have managed to create an entire product universe from this single raw material source that gives the impression: the more expensive, the better the results. This article shows you what science has to say about it.  <\/p>&#13;\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 20px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n&#13;\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #006900;\">The most important protein powders compared<\/span><\/h2>&#13;\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 20px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n&#13;\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udd5b Whey Protein Concentrate (~75\u201380% protein)<\/h3>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 Best value for money for muscle building<\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>During cheese production, casein precipitates through enzymatic coagulation \u2013 the remaining whey is filtered and spray-dried. The result still contains small amounts of lactose and fat. For most athletes, this is completely sufficient \u2013 and usually the least expensive product on the shelf (<strong><span style=\"color: #006900;\"><a style=\"color: #006900;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34066033\/\">2<\/a><\/span><\/strong>).  <\/p>&#13;\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 15px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n&#13;\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd2c Whey Protein Isolate (&gt;90% protein)<\/h3>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 Virtually lactose-free \u2013 but no advantage for muscle building<\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>Same raw material, further purified form: Through finer membrane processes or ion exchange, lactose and fat are almost completely removed. The protein content increases to over 90%. The question is: Does a healthy athlete really need this (<strong><span style=\"color: #006900;\"><a style=\"color: #006900;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34066033\/\">2<\/a><\/span><\/strong>)?  <\/p>&#13;\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 15px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n&#13;\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26a1 Whey Protein Hydrolysate (pre-digested)<\/h3>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 Fastest absorption \u2013 but no measurable added benefit<\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>Not a further purification step, but a structural modification: enzymes break down whey proteins into shorter peptides that enter the bloodstream more quickly. Optimal as an evening shake or during long meal breaks (<strong><span style=\"color: #006900;\"><a style=\"color: #006900;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28536184\/\">3<\/a><\/span><\/strong>).  <\/p>&#13;\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 20px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n&#13;\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #006900;\">What the supplement industry does not tell you about protein powder<\/span><\/h2>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>This is where it gets interesting \u2013 and a bit uncomfortable for the industry. Looking at the marketing promises, one gets the impression that isolate is clearly superior to concentrate and hydrolysate is superior to isolate. More purity, faster absorption, better results. But what does science say?   <\/p>&#13;\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 20px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">&#13;\n<p><strong>\u26a0\ufe0f <span style=\"color: #006900;\">Critical perspective:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #006900;\"> <\/span><span style=\"color: #3c3c3b;\">The supplement industry suggests that a higher purity level directly leads to more muscle growth. This conclusion is not scientifically valid\u2014and it costs athletes unnecessarily large amounts of money every year. <\/span><\/p>&#13;\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 15px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n&#13;\n<p>The decisive marker is <strong data-start=\"2313\" data-end=\"2344\">muscle protein synthesis (MPS)<\/strong> \u2013 that is, how strongly a protein stimulates <strong data-start=\"2378\" data-end=\"2394\">muscle building<\/strong> and muscle recovery. And here, studies provide a clear picture: <strong>No hydrolysate has significantly surpassed whey concentrate or isolate in activating MPS (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31095313\/\">4<\/a>).<\/strong> <\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>Interestingly: hydrolysate does indeed achieve higher peak amino acid and leucine levels in the blood more quickly \u2013 both at rest and after strength training \u2013 than whey concentrate (<strong><span style=\"color: #006900;\"><a style=\"color: #006900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jomh.org\/articles\/10.22514\/jomh.2023.129\">5<\/a><\/span><\/strong>). That initially sounds like an advantage. However, in the study mentioned, MPS itself was not measured at all \u2013 and that is precisely the point: <strong>A higher leucine peak in the blood does not automatically mean more muscle building.<\/strong> The kinetics are faster, the result remains the same.  <\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>This is also confirmed by an 8-week training study in which hydrolysate was compared against two concentrate products and placebo: there were no significant differences between the protein groups in muscle gain and strength development. Only in fat reduction did the hydrolysate group show a slight advantage \u2013 a finding that hardly matters in practice (<strong><span style=\"color: #006900;\"><a style=\"color: #006900;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27710436\/\">6<\/a><\/span><\/strong>). <\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>The same applies to the comparison of isolate vs. concentrate: the marginally higher purity of isolate does not lead to any measurable added value in MPS for healthy, lactose-tolerant athletes.
